Kamoshika Shoten bookshop and cafe

Kamoshika_Oita.jpg

Step through the doorway of Kamoshika Shoten, in central Oita City, and it is apparent that the owner, Shinsaku Iwao, has a passion for the printed word and a knack of creating comfortable environments. In a cultured yet convivial atmosphere his loosely ordered, almost impromptu displays of a mix of new and second-hand books and magazines seem to have less an eye on commerce than as a balm to visitors browsing the shelves. Reflecting Iwao’s personal tastes, his shop focuses on art, architecture, music, fashion, film, poetry through classical Japanese and overseas novels to gardening and children’s books.

Art exhibited on the walls adds to the composed ambience, as does the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee that draws all to Kamoshika’s cosy café and bar. Bring a book from the shelf to peruse here while enjoying a light meal, caffeinated beverage or something stronger.
