Shipbuilding & Ship Launches

Oita_Shipbuilding.jpg

A number of shipyards are found in the south of Oita around Usuki and Saiki. Although they are not normally open to the public, a ship launch is a cause to celebrate and access is often given on these occasions. Speeches are made, a bottle of champagne is cracked against the prow, and brass band music resounds across the yard as the ship slips down into the water streaming bunting, balloons and confetti in its wake. The shipyards’ websites, which include Usuki, Saiki Heavy and Miura, provide details on any forthcoming launches.
