Golf has a long history in Japan with the first golf course established in Kobe in 1903 by a British expatriate yearning to play his favourite sport. Ever since the game’s popularity burgeoned amongst the Japanese and now there are now over 2,000 courses throughout the country with 24 of these in Oita. Japan’s courses can provide some excellent play and fine settings in beautiful scenery in which to thoroughly enjoy a round of golf. Besides everything that you would expect on your home golf courses, the Japanese, of course, add their particularly interesting frisson from very friendly service, through thoroughly knowledgeable and helpful caddies to fascinating and useful, remote control carts.
Simply playing a round on a golf course in Japan provides visitors with an unique experience; the pace is generally more leisurely than many overseas players are accustomed to, including a compulsory lunch stop after 9 holes and, after completing a round, the luxury of hot bath, which are sometimes onsen hot springs.
Oita’s golf courses are found throughout the prefecture with concentrations around the main cities of Oita and Beppu. The best ranked courses include Oita Sunny Hills, Oita Tokyu, Kijima Kogen, Kuju Kogen, Pacific Blue, and Yufu Kogen. Japan’s golf courses provide great variety from coastal links set in pine forests through to courses set deep in ancient, volcanic calderas; from courses seemingly inspired by stepped paddy field to others in high valleys surround by towering mountains. Although most are 18-holes, one or two courses have intriguing aspect including Japan’s second oldest course, at Unzen in Kyushu, which creates 18-holes from a 9 fairway course each set with two different tees and greens. Some courses can be counted amongst the world’s best but most, if not all, provide an interesting and great day’s play.
