With more onsen hot springs than anywhere else in Japan, Beppu takes the crown as the nation’s top…
At the very southern limit of Oita’s coastline, just on the boarder with Miyazaki, is Hatotsu Kaigan, a sandy beach settled into a lovely, secluded bay fringed with pine trees. Undoubtedly, it is one of Oita’s remotest beaches and an ideal destination for anyone looking for some quiet and solitude. There is little else here except a small settlement and only the peaceful breaking of waves lapping on the shore. Camping is permitted amongst the pine trees but make sure to bring supplies as there are no shops to speak of nor restaurants.

An idyllic beach at Oita's furthest southern reach.
