Fukae Fish Market

Oita’s 774km long coastline is lined with fishing ports, both great and small, but only a few have a fish market. One exception is at Fukae, in Hiji on the Kunisaki Peninsula, a sleepy fishing village. Early each morning the day’s fresh catch is unloaded onto the dock for fish traders and restaurant owners to make their bids. Local residents often attend to purchase fish at bargain prices.
